5 most popular aesthetic treatments

What can treat my under eye bags? Which aesthetic treatment can plump my lips? What is the best way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles?

Aesthetic treatments can seem overwhelming - both the decision process and the treatment itself. But, the more information and guidance you have, the less overwhelming the cosmetic treatment will seem.

In order to narrow down the growing number of treatment options, we’ve accumulated the five most popular aesthetic treatments - yes, ‘Botox’ may be a buzzword in the cosmetic world but it isn’t the only bio-stimulator injectable available.

Here are the five most popular aesthetic treatments

Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins provide a minimally-invasive treatment option for reducing wrinkles. While there are different brand names, including Dysport, Xeomin, and Botox, the latter is the most well-known and the treatment is usually characterized as simply ‘Botox’.

Botox is a non-surgical procedure that focuses on the wrinkle areas. Each injectable has a primary active ingredient called Botulinum Toxin A, which blocks the nerve impulses of muscles and temporarily weakens the muscle movements (which ultimately causes wrinkles).

During the aesthetic treatment, the esthetician injects the muscles with the neurotoxins to stop muscle activity temporarily. This pause in muscle movement helps reduce or remove fine lines and wrinkles by enabling the skin to naturally renew itself.

Results from the procedure begin to appear a few days after the injection and neurotoxins last about 3-4 months. At around the 3-4 months mark, the muscles begin to regain strength (wearing off the neurotoxin) and causing the wrinkles and movement to reappear.

When should you consider Neurotoxins?

There is no specific age as everyone’s skin is different and everyone has different concerns. But, some choose to start with neurotoxins at a younger age as a preventative injectable in order to prevent lines from becoming ingrained (and ultimately harder to reduce/remove).

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers

Dermal fillers help restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases in order to enhance one's facial contours.

The gel-like substance is injected beneath the skin and can:

  • Adds volume to different areas of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, and under eyes

  • Smooths out wrinkles, especially around the mouth and nose

  • Enhances facial contours: Aging can cause facial tissues to thin out and, with the loss of bone mass, lines become much more apparent. Dermal fillers can help restore the facial contours by adding volume and hydration.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is already found in your skin - helps keep it plump and hydrated. During the aesthetic treatment, the stabilized non-animal hyaluronic acid (gel-like substance) is injected into various layers of the skin to restore the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid. The injection process only takes around 30 minutes and the results are immediate.

Let’s take a closer look at an aesthetic treatment that uses dermal fillers

Plumper lips

Dermal fillers are the most common aesthetic treatment used to add volume to one's lips. Hyaluronic acid is injected skillfully to the lips in order to restore volume, improve lip shape, and minimize fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

Lip filler before and after

One of the major concerns among those considering lip fillers is the fear that their lips will look unnatural. If this is also one of your concerns, try out eMI’s facial simulator (for free!) and see what you’ll look like with lip fillers (you can play around with the level of fillers and decide what's your desired look).

What are the differences between Botox and fillers?

Botox

Fillers

Works to reduce the appearance of lines that are visible when smiling, frowning, or squinting (and stops new lines from forming)

Treats deeper lines/wrinkles that are present even when the face is completely at rest

Reduces muscle movement

Fill up/plump the skin while replacing and stimulating the production of collagen

Results appear after a few days and last between 3-6 months

Immediate results and can last between 6 months to 2 years

Polynucleotides

This is a somewhat newer aesthetic treatment that focuses on stimulating your own cells to produce more elastin and collagen.

The injectable, which is made from fragments of fish DNA (these are the most similar to human DNA), is inserted into the skin and it stimulates your own cells to produce some of the things that are lost with aging, such as fibroblast cells, which are responsible for producing collagen and elastin.

The thing that makes Polynucleotides stand out is that the gel-like substance improves skin quality (rather than simply adding volume to facial features). This type of aesthetic treatment targets “skin-damaging free radicals, boosts hydration and improves tissue regeneration”.

Estheticians have noted that this aesthetic treatment is a game changer when it comes to treating the under eye (which is one of the first places to show signs of skin aging). Patients that aren’t ideal candidates for tear trough fillers can instead inject Polynucleotides which can not only improve the under eye appearance but it's also a natural alternative.

There are immediate results following Polynucleotides treatment, but the product will continue stimulating the area for 12 weeks. The gradual onset makes it that you not only see continuous results, but the skin quality and elasticity also improves.

It’s important to note that Polynucleotides treatment is an animal product - so it’s not suitable for vegetarians, vegans or patients with fish allergies.

Exosomes

Exosomes is one of the most popular skincare trends of 2024!

This bio-stimulator is derived from plant stem cells and, when applied to the skin, it sends a message to the old and lazy skin cells to act young again - reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

During the aesthetic treatment, nano-needling or a combination of micro-needling and radio frequency, pushes the exosomes deeper into the skin in order to ensure that the bio-simulator signals the skin cells to produce more collagen.

It’s important to keep in mind that this type of aesthetic treatment isn’t a ‘quick fix’. Exosomes stimulate your own natural process of skin rejuvenation, so it will take at least three weeks to start seeing results. However, patients have claimed that the wait is worth it as some benefits from this aesthetic treatment include: brighter and smoother skin, reduction in inflammation (rosacea or acne), less pigmentation and stronger/healthier skin.

Profhilo

This uber-popular aesthetic treatment works on rejuvenating the skin from the inside out. The hyaluronic acid injectable stimulates 4 different types of collagen and elastin by a slow release of the gel-like substance. Ultimately, it adds natural volume to the face, as well as, a lifting and tightening effect, creating a youthful appearance.

Unlike dermal fillers, Profhilo is more of a hydrator - as it disperses under the skin, it boost hydration which ultimately smooths out fine lines/wrinkles and improves your skins texture.

When should you consider Profhilo?

This aesthetic treatment is claimed to be a breakthrough in anti-aging medicine, therefore the preferred age to start this treatment is from 40-50 years. However, there are people that start Profhilo treatment before the age of 40 as more of a preventative treatment - to keep the skin strong before the wrinkles and sagging start making their appearance.
